As I prepare to embark on the golf vacation of a lifetime, a little perspective seems appropriate.

Three Generations Golf Getaway began a few years ago with Ryan, Bapa, and me. In 2023, while driving from Shannon to Dingle along Ireland’s breathtaking west coast, Stacey and I stopped to stretch our legs. That stop happened to be at Ballybunion, where we crossed a fairway on our way to the shoreline.

Standing in that fairway, I was overcome with emotion and made a simple declaration: someday, I would return with my son and my father-in-law.

That someday has arrived.

What started as Three Generations Golf Getaway has evolved into Three Generations Golf Getaway Ireland Scotland — 3GIS (pronounced “three guys”).

And so, 🇮🇪3GIS🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 is “officially” underway. Three generations, two countries, countless memories ahead, and smiles already from ear to ear. ⛳️❤️🍀

I say “officially” because first we have to get there.

My journey began a day early so I could join Bapa on a direct flight from Boston to Shannon. Stacey was kind enough to drive me to the airport well before sunrise, and Charlie eventually agreed to return to bed. Her approval came with only a minor protest, as she promptly claimed my now-vacant side of the bed.

With that, the adventure was underway. The months of planning, dreaming, and counting down had finally given way to departure day. Ireland awaited, and before long, 3GIS would be together on the Emerald Isle, ready to begin the golf journey we had imagined ever since that memorable stop at Ballybunion.

The early departure was driven largely by my anxiety about flying. I figured that if there were any delays or cancellations, I’d still have a full day to make my way to Scituate and Boston. Yes, I can be a bit obsessive about planning.

As it turned out, everything went smoothly. I arrived right on schedule, and my Uber driver—Bapa—was waiting curbside as I stepped out of baggage claim. Before long, we were clear of the city and headed toward beautiful Scituate, where I’d spend the night before our Sunday flight to Shannon. It was a comforting start to what promises to be the golf adventure of a lifetime.

Trusty Driver Bapa at Logan

Our journey south included some nostalgic stops in Cohasset before arriving on Hazel Avenue. I sure do love this beautiful home.

Mimi and Bapa headed off to the church hall to wish a Meals on Wheels client happy birthday while I made my way to Widow’s Walk for a little putting practice. The sun was shining, and the view from the putting green was every bit as spectacular as always. It was a peaceful way to spend part of the afternoon, soaking in the beauty of Scituate while rolling a few putts before the adventure ahead. ⛳️☀️🌊

Not a bad spot

Of course, I took the obligatory detour around the harbor before heading back to Camp Mimi-Bapa for a relaxing afternoon. The familiar sights and salty air made for the perfect ending to the day. This is, indeed, exactly the right pace to begin our epic adventure!

We decided on an early dinner at the Drift In back at Widows Walk, where we all enjoyed delicious lobster rolls. They were absolutely perfect—fresh, flavorful, and exactly what a summer evening on the South Shore calls for.

Yum!

The dessert plan sparked a lively debate, but we ultimately settled on ice cream chipwiches and brought them back to the Gathering Room to enjoy together. Afterward, I took a stroll down to the harbor as the sun slowly dipped below the horizon. The evening light reflected off the water, and from the Town Pier I was treated to a truly spectacular view.

The Sox vs Yanks game was rained out, so we chatted in the Gathering Room before retiring to a nice night of sleep

I awoke to a beautiful Sunday morning and walked down to the harbor to meet Mom and Dad for coffee. We found a dry bench overlooking the boat slips and settled in for an hour of conversation while enjoying the peaceful start to the day. During our visit, Ryan texted to let us know he had arrived safely in London for a layover before continuing on to Shannon. Tomorrow we’ll meet up with him and officially begin the next chapter of our adventure.

Waving to Ryan!

Before our driver gets here to take us to Logan, we enjoyed subs from Maria’s on the back porch. A perfect conclusion to a great 🇮🇪3GIS🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 start from beautiful Scituate! ☀️🌊

A MUST stop!
