The obvious proper title for this post should be Getting older, as I celebrated my 56th birthday here in Scituate. But I choose to believe that each of us is really just getting a little bit wiser, year by year. Some of that wisdom is quite pure in simplicity. As Charlie gently pawed at me to tell me it was time to go outside, I glanced out the window as I rose and noticed the edges of a beautiful orange sky as the sun also rose from the Atlantic. I grabbed my phone on the way out to the yard with Charlie and was rewarded with my first birthday gift.

Dawn…17 September 2025

Again, a picture doesn’t quite capture the awesome wonder of such a spectacular sunrise, but it beats a kick in the teeth (though… most things do).

Charlie and I had a coffee date to start our day with Mimi & Bapa at the Hi Tops overlooking the harbor. This is certainly not their first rodeo, as Mimi had a bag with a towel in it to wipe the considerable dew from the table and chairs before we sat down. I noticed a few minutes later that she got up and wiped down all the other tables and chairs as well – so thoughtful! They gave me my traditional gift of an annual subscription to Sports Illustrated, which I love. But what I really love, and those of us fortunate to know Bapa well do too, is the thoughtful poem he writes and puts in our birthday cards. They are AMAZING, and I wanted to share this special one here.

Stacey returned today after a few days back home in Virginia, and I went into Boston to pick her up at the airport. We planned a lunch date at Castle Island on the way home, and it was great! Both of us ordered lobster rolls from Sullivan’s and we sat at a picnic table near the water to enjoy them.

Bday lobster roll!

We took a lovely stroll around Pleasure Bay, with a fantastic view of the Boston skyline. You guessed it… time for the obligatory selfie!

We also saw a seagull catch a crab and call for his friend to join him for lunch, and a man in waders fly-fishing on the Dorchester Bay side. It was a really nice walk and a special treat to welcome Stacey back. 😍

While returning along the beach, Stacey found another piece of treasured sea glass for our collection before we headed south for our cottage by the sea.

😍🌊☀️

Stacey went to school with a woman here that is now an outstanding photographer. She captures the essence of this coastal area quite beautifully. We were shopping in her studio our first week here and I picked up and loved this book of a collection of her images. Stace went back and got it for me for my birthday! You can check out more of this beautiful art at www.thenauticalcollection.com if you like. Simply stunning.

I got to choose dinner, so of course subs and pizza from Maria’s were on the menu. The Sox are playing important games in September again, though not as well as we hope. They understood it was my birthday and treated us to a walkoff win in the 10th inning against the Athletics. Phew! A Win and free baseball – you can’t ask for more! ⚾️🇺🇸⚾️
