I wrote previously that we are so familiar with the South Shore that there was very little to discover. But, that’s not true. In fact, that is probably never true for any of us. Places change. People change. Again, time marches on. So, we went out today with the intent to look a little closer at this area by the sea.

In Cohasset Village, we dined at a place new to us, 5 South Main Street. It was small but quaint, and we had a friendly waitress that brought us delicious lunches. Afterwards, we walked around a bit. Mimi had shared with me a writeup describing the South Shore Irish Heritage Trail (www.ssirishtrail.org), and one of the sites mentioned there was the Maritime Museum located right in downtown. It wasn’t open, but it was still cool to walk past and look a little closer.

I probably road past this building hundreds of times either on my bike or in the Saab my parents let me drive as a teenager, and I never knew its significance.

From there, we drove past the common to the Cohasset Central Cemetery. I remember going here with the Cub Scouts about 100 years ago to pick up the few pieces of trash we found and pull some weeds. Today, I again realized how historic and significant this place of eternal rest is. I recognized many names as we walked through the grounds on yet another gorgeous day.

Our featured image today is of the Celtic Cross Monument found in that cemetery. It honors the lives of 99 emigrants from Ireland who were fleeing the great famine in search of better lives. They perished in the waters off Cohasset when their ship wrecked near Grampus Ledge. The headstones in this peaceful cemetery found on the National Register of Historic Places date back nearly 300 years, and includes some who participated in The Boston Tea Party. Just wow.

We drove out to the gut in Hull and enjoyed the view on a beautiful day.

It was just a lovely day taking in the sights of the South Shore we grew up on.

On Saturday, we drove in to Boston to meet the Labaks and the Geromini kids for brunch. It was a really nice visit catching up on their lives. Anthony is headed to Greece with Amanda and her family this week! I found myself a little jealous, but I realize how lucky we are to be here in Scituate for the month too!

Stacey has gone home for a couple of days to see Em and recharge. I met the Muncey family at Polcari’s for lunch and we toasted Chip with Shirley Temples!

It definitely wasn’t the same without Chip, but he was certainly with us in spirit. Charlie spent time solidifying her role as best houseguest on Hazel Avenue!
